Immich
Self-hosted photo and video backup with a Google Photos-style timeline.

Best for
People with large photo libraries who want automatic phone backup without handing their memories to a cloud subscription.
Why it deserves attention
Immich runs on your own server through Docker and gives phones automatic background upload, a timeline, albums, shared albums, search, face recognition, and object detection. Clients exist for iOS, Android, and the web, and the server stores originals while generating thumbnails and transcoded videos for fast browsing. It is AGPL-3.0 with about 118,000 GitHub stars and is very actively developed. The trade-off is that you run and back up the server yourself, storage and CPU costs are yours, and the project has warned that breaking changes can occur between releases, so backups and reading release notes matter.
