Ente
End-to-end encrypted photo storage with apps on every platform.

Best for
People who want Google Photos-style backup without handing the encryption keys to the provider, or who want to self-host.
Why it deserves attention
Ente is AGPL-3.0 and has about 30,000 GitHub stars. Photos, videos, and albums are encrypted on the device before upload, so the server stores ciphertext; face recognition runs on-device, and search works over encrypted metadata. Apps exist for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, and the web, and the server can be self-hosted. The free plan includes 10 GB, with paid tiers for more storage, and the same account also covers Ente Auth for two-factor codes and Locker for files. The trade-off is that larger libraries need a subscription, some AI features are still maturing, and the encrypted model means recovery depends on your own key or recovery phrase.
