Adobe Photoshop
The raster editor the rest of the industry still measures itself against, now with generative AI retouching.

Best for
Photographers, retouchers and designers who need the deepest layer, masking and compositing controls available.
Why it deserves attention
Photoshop remains the reference for raster work: layer stacks with adjustment layers and smart objects, advanced masking and selection, content-aware fill, Camera Raw, extensive brush engines and a file format nearly every tool can read. Recent versions add Firefly-powered Generative Fill and Expand, AI selection and removal, and tighter links to Illustrator and Lightroom, while the iPad app covers lighter edits. The trade-offs are obvious and worth stating: it is subscription-only, the full interface is heavy for simple tasks, and a single wrong save can be costly without careful versioning — Affinity Photo and GIMP cover many jobs for far less.
