Krita
A free, open-source painting studio for illustration, concept art, and comics.

Best for
Digital painters who want a full brush engine without a subscription.
Why it deserves attention
Krita offers a customizable brush engine, wrap-around mode, stabilizers, vector layers, comic panel templates, and animation tools, and it handles large canvases well. It is GPL-3.0 and free, available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, funded by donations and the Krita Foundation. It is painting-first rather than a photo editor or vector design tool, so Photoshop-style retouching or UI design is better elsewhere. Tablet support is strong, but some workflows differ from Adobe conventions.
