Best for

Designers who want layers, masks, and adjustment tools on the Mac without an Adobe subscription.

Why it deserves attention

Compositor is a native Mac image editor focused on compositing: layers and folders, layer and clipping masks, blend modes, selections, adjustment layers, filters, background removal, liquify, spot healing, and clone stamp. It is MIT-licensed and free, and because the Xcode project is public you can modify or extend it. The trade-off is scope and maturity: it is Mac-only, younger than GIMP or Photoshop, and it targets still-image compositing rather than illustration, vector work, or a plugin marketplace.
