HandBrake
An open-source video transcoder that turns any source into a smaller, compatible file.

Best for
People who need to shrink recordings, convert discs, or make videos play on a specific device.
Why it deserves attention
HandBrake reads DVDs, Blu-ray folders, and most video files, then transcodes them with H.264, H.265, AV1, or VP9 using presets for phones, TVs, and streaming. It supports batch queues, subtitle and chapter handling, cropping, filters, and hardware encoders such as VideoToolbox and NVENC, and it can scan a source and suggest settings. It is GPL-licensed, free, and runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The trade-off is that it is a transcoder, not an editor: there is no timeline, and the preset list can overwhelm newcomers even though the default Fast 1080p30 preset covers most cases.
