Best for

Anyone who receives video files in odd formats or codecs and does not want to install codec packs.

Why it deserves attention

VLC bundles its own codecs and plays MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WebM, FLAC, and many legacy formats without extra downloads. It handles network streams, DVD and Blu-ray folders, subtitles, audio tracks, an equalizer, video filters, and simple conversion, and runs on macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and smart TVs. It is GPL-2.0 with about 20,000 GitHub stars and has no ads, tracking, or paid tier. The interface shows its age, hardware decoding and HDR behavior vary by platform, and on macOS IINA offers a more native experience; VLC's strength is breadth and reliability rather than polish.
