DEVONthinkUnderrated
A local document manager that indexes, searches and files everything you throw at it.

Best for
Researchers, lawyers and writers who keep tens of thousands of PDFs, emails and scans on their own Mac.
Why it deserves attention
DEVONthink keeps documents in a local database: it imports PDFs, Office files, email, web archives and scans, runs OCR on images, extracts text and offers See Also suggestions based on related content. Smart rules can file and tag automatically, search covers full text and metadata across the whole database, and sync works over iCloud, CloudKit, WebDAV or Bonjour. A companion iOS app can read and capture on the go, and a browser extension clips pages. It is commercial software with three editions, a perpetual licence, and no cloud account required. The learning curve is steep, the interface shows its age, and the iOS app is sold separately.
