Best for

Students and researchers who need one library for papers, web pages, and citations across Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs.

Why it deserves attention

Zotero saves papers, books, and web pages with one click, stores PDFs, lets you highlight and annotate them, and inserts citations and bibliographies into Word, LibreOffice, and Google Docs through its plugins. It supports groups for shared libraries, tags, saved searches, and a web library, with apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. The software is free and open source with about 16,000 GitHub stars; sync includes 300 MB of free storage, and larger libraries need a paid plan or a WebDAV server. It is not a note-taking app first, so long-form writing and deep PDF editing still belong in other tools.
