## Best for

Writers with a folder of Markdown files who want speed and local ownership without a full knowledge-base app.

## Why it deserves attention

Writer Computer opens a folder of plain Markdown files and stays out of the way: the download is about 6 MB, cold starts take a fraction of a second, and multiple windows let you keep separate workspaces open. It renders tables, Mermaid diagrams, LaTeX math, and HTML, understands YAML frontmatter, and includes a command palette, themes, and following links between notes. It is GPL-3.0 with 1,700 GitHub stars and free forever, with no account or cloud dependency. It is still beta (0.8), macOS-only, and has fewer plugins, backlinks, and automations than Obsidian.
