## Best for

People who need to protect sensitive files at rest and want an audited, cross-platform encryption tool rather than a cloud vault.

## Why it deserves attention

VeraCrypt creates encrypted file containers and encrypts whole partitions or drives with AES, Serpent, Twofish, and cascaded combinations. It supports hidden volumes and hidden operating systems for plausible deniability, keyfiles, PIM, and mounting on demand, and runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. It is open source and free, and it continues the TrueCrypt line with stronger key derivation. The trade-off is that losing the password or keyfile means losing the data, macOS mounting may require macFUSE, and the interface and documentation are technical; it protects data at rest, not a running system against malware.
