Best for

People who want their email, calendar, and contacts in a desktop app they control, without a subscription.

Why it deserves attention

Thunderbird handles IMAP and POP accounts, unified folders, fast search, a calendar, contacts, and OpenPGP encryption, and it extends through add-ons. It is MPL-2.0 licensed and free, with builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Mozilla is also building Thundermail, a privacy-focused mail service that will work with the client. The trade-off is a traditional interface that some find dense, plus local indexing and storage that grow with very large mailboxes.
