## Best for

People who want a trustworthy VPN with a usable free tier for everyday browsing.

## Why it deserves attention

Proton VPN comes from the team behind Proton Mail, is based in Switzerland, and publishes independent audits. The free plan has no data cap and includes servers in a few countries; paid plans add more locations, faster servers, streaming and P2P support, and multi-device access. Clients for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android are open source, and features include WireGuard, kill switch, split tunneling, and Secure Core routing. The trade-off is that the free tier is limited in server choice and speed, and a VPN changes your traffic path but does not make you anonymous.
