## Best for

Mac users who want to play almost any video format with subtitles, picture-in-picture, and keyboard control in one polished app.

## Why it deserves attention

IINA pairs the mpv playback engine with a native macOS interface, so it opens formats QuickTime refuses, handles high-resolution and HDR files, and keeps smooth trackpad gestures, picture-in-picture, and customizable keyboard shortcuts. It searches and downloads subtitles, supports online video through yt-dlp, and remembers playback position per file. It is GPL-3.0 with about 47,000 GitHub stars and is actively maintained. The trade-off is that it is macOS-only, and advanced mpv options still require editing a config file rather than a full settings UI.
