Docker Desktop
The desktop app that runs Linux containers on your machine and keeps images, logs and Compose stacks one click away.

Best for
Developers who want a working container runtime locally without hand-building a VM.
Why it deserves attention
Docker Desktop bundles the Docker Engine, CLI, BuildKit, Compose and an optional single-node Kubernetes into one installer, then adds a GUI for containers, images, volumes and logs so you can inspect and clean up without memorising commands. File sharing and resource limits are configurable, and dev containers give every project a reproducible toolchain. The caveats: it is free for personal use, education, non-commercial open source and small businesses, but larger companies need a paid Pro, Team or Business subscription, and the VM layer costs memory and battery. If licensing or weight is a problem, OrbStack and Colima are solid alternatives on macOS.
