## Best for

Students and language learners who need to retain large amounts of material over months, not cram the night before.

## Why it deserves attention

Anki schedules flashcards with spaced repetition, so cards you find hard return sooner and easy ones fade into the distance. It supports text, images, audio, cloze deletions, and image occlusion, with shared decks, add-ons, statistics, and optional free syncing through AnkiWeb. The desktop app is free and open source on macOS, Windows, and Linux, AnkiDroid is free on Android, and AnkiMobile for iPhone and iPad is a paid one-time purchase that funds development. It has about 32,000 GitHub stars. The interface is dated and the learning curve is real: making good cards and tuning the scheduler takes effort, and the iOS app is not free.
